COMMUNITY INFORMATION CENTRES (CICs)

North Eastern States :- Department of Information Technology (DIT) has implemented a scheme for setting up of 487 Community Information Centres (CICs) at Block Headquarters in the 8 North Eastern States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to accelerate socio-economic development of the region with projected outlay of Rs 242 Crores. Project has been implemented by NIC/NICSI.

Each CIC is manned by the 2 trained CIC operators. Each CIC is equipped with 1 Server, 5 Client Systems, VSAT, Laser Printer, Dot Matrix Printer, Modem, LAN Hub, TV, Webcam, 2 UPS and Software. In addition 78 Post Offices in the North Eastern States have been provided with a computer and peripherals for connectivity with CICs. All CICs are operational and are providing Internet access and IT enabled services to facilitate citizens interface with the Government. For more information, click here.

Setting up of 68 additional CICs in the newly created blocks of North East has been taken up. CIC at Nathula Pass in Sikkim near the Indo-China border has been commissioned.

Jammu & Kashmir :- Based on the experiences and performance of the CIC project in the North Eastern States, the replication of the same scheme has been taken up for setting up of 135 CICs at the Block Headquarters in the State of Jammu & Kashmir with projected outlay of Rs 40.67 Crores. 116 CICs have been set up and are providing Internet services, computer education and training to local community / government offices and school children. Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands :- The scheme has been extended for setting up of 41 CICs in the Government Schools of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and 30 CICs in the Government Schools of Lakshadweep Islands with projected outlay of Rs 21.75 Crores. Project is being implemented by ERNET India. These CICs would serve the dual purpose of education and training as well as providing IT enabled services to populace. 2 CICs have been established and made operational at Car Nicobar and Campbell Bay in Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
