WORKSHOP OF WRITERS AND THINKERS ON LOCAL GOVERNANCE AND PANCHAYATI RAJ TO BE HELD AT VIGYAN BHAWAN, NEW DELHI FROM TOMORROW

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj has convened a Workshop of Writers and Thinkers on Local Governance and Panchayati Raj from 23rd to 25th June, 2006 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The three day Workshop will be presided over by the Minister of Panchayati Raj, Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar.

This Workshop will deliberate over 14 Sessions, during which the audience will speak and the podium will listen. Day One will see over forty Speakers cover (i) Overview of Panchayati Raj (ii) Devolution Issues in Panchayati Raj (iii) Governance Issues, Right to Information and Panchayati Raj, and (iv) Training and Capacity Building in Panchayati Raj Institutions. Over 50 Speakers have registered on Day Two to speak on (i) Economy, Business & Panchayati Raj Institutions (ii) Gender Issues in Panchayati Raj (iii) Land issues and Agriculture in Panchayati Raj (iv) Livelihood security, Tribal affairs, Dalits and Marginalised communities in Panchayati Raj (v) Civil Society, Parallel Institutions & Panchayati Raj (vi) National Rural Employment Guarantee & Panchayati Raj and (vii) Traditional institutions and Panchayati Raj.

Day Three will cover State Related Issues in Panchayati Raj, There will be two additional Sessions, one for Other Issues in Panchayati Raj, and another Session for “Interventions by Unregistered Speakers”. The Valedictory Session will commence with a film by Magsaysay Award Winner Smt. Aruna Roy. The Valedictory Address will be from Dr. Y K Alagh, Former Union Minister and Dr. Hafiz Pasha, Assistant Secretary General UNDP. Minister for Panchayati Raj, Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar will speak on ‘Lessons I have learnt from the Workshop”.

Prominent Writers and Thinkers, who are have registered to speak include Smt. Aruna Roy, B N Yugandhar, Shri L.C. Jain, Niraja Gopal Jayal, D. Bandhoyopadyaya, Dr. B.D. Sharma, Subhash Medhapurkar, P. Sainath, KV SivaRamakrishnan, Jose Chathukulam, Bejon Misra, Shahir Hassan, and Dr. George Mathew.
