Women empowerment key to India’s development

The centenary celebration ceremony was also presided over by Higher and Technical Education Minister Dilip Walse-Patil, who spoke of the importance of empowering women. Speaking of the opportunities in education today, Walse-Patil said that vocational subjects should be included in the syllabus of std XI and XII. He also announced that the admission procedures would be computerised to speed up the process. ‘‘The e-suvidha will facilitate the admission procedure for 25 lakh college students,’’ he said.

The Mahilashram High School for girls, established by Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve, started out with six students in 1906. Today, the school provides education to over 20,000 girls . Its hostels accommodate 1,200 students, of which 500 students are provided with full or partial financial assistance
