Aizawl, July 14: Mizoram is all set to witness a boost in its information technology sector with a unit of the Software Technology Park of India (STPI) coming up in the state.

D.S. Mathur, secretary of the department of information technology, said that the proposed unit of “the plug and play facilitator” — STPI — in Mizoram would soon be opened.

At a review meeting of community information centres by the task force committee in Gangtok on Tuesday, Mathur also appreciated the efforts of Mizoram government in the development of its IT sector.

“The STPI unit will have state-of-the-art technology and act as an incubator for the young entrepreneurs,” said the assistant director of STPI, Guwahati, Debajit Sarma, who arrived in the state capital yesterday.

The Union government had entrusted Sarma with the task of inspecting the building offered by the state government for the establishment of the STPI unit.

The STPI unit will include an earth station, which will serve as an international gateway hooking up with Intel satellite. The unit will be established with bandwidth availability on demand and no last-mile problem. It will also disperse a seamless connectivity, while acting as facilitator for developing secondary cities. The main objective is to promote small and medium-scale entrepreneurs.

Lalrodingi, project director of IT under the state industries department, said, “We are happy that the state will have an STPI unit soon. Our department is ready to extend all possible help and support to any IT developer within or from outside our country.”

The DIT has so far set up 41 STPI units in the country and Mizoram’s will be the 42nd.
