Govt. plans to form 25,000 more SHGs’

Utilise benefits of welfare schemes, says Minister




ATTUR: Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam called upon the members of self-help groups (SHGs) to take full advantage of the Government schemes to better their quality of life.

Participating at a loan distribution function to the member of the SHGs here on Sunday, the Minister listed out the efforts taken by the Government to promote SHGs in the State and said the Government was very keen on developing the SHGs.

Mr. Arumugam said the Government had planned to form about 25,000 more SHGs to benefit about five lakh women in the State in the current year. It had directed the officials to provide a sum of Rs. 45 per day to a SHG member while attending training programmes.

`Repay loans’

He further said the SHGs should start enterprises with the loan assistance from banks and subsidy from the Government. Asking the SHG members to put in hard work in their enterprises, he stressed that the SHGs should promptly repay the bank loans.

Tracing the history of the emergence of SHGs in the country, Mr. Arumugam said the members should guide the poor and the physically challenged persons in their respective areas to access the welfare schemes. The Minister distributed a sum of Rs. 82.40 lakhs as loans and revolving fund to a total of 206 SHGs. He also gave away welfare assistance, including old age pension to 51 beneficiaries, agriculture inputs to 10 farmers and saplings to three persons in the function. Earlier, he inaugurated an exhibition of products manufactured by the SHGs.

Collector N. Mathivanan, while presiding over the function, said members of the SHGs should remain united and take concerted efforts to improve their socio-economic conditions.

SHG members from Attur, Gengavalli, Talavasal and Pedhanaickanpalayam panchayat unions and Attur town took part in the function. Project Director of District Rural Development Agency Jegannathan welcomed. Senior officials of various departments were present in the function.
