Complaints about non-availability of medicines in primary health centres

MANGALORE: B. Nagaraj Shetty, district in-charge Minister, has instructed officials of the Department of Health not to store outdated medicines in any of the primary health centres (PHCs) across the district.

Presiding over the review meeting of the Karnataka Development Programme here on Tuesday, Mr. Shetty said the Government was receiving complaints about non-availability of medicines in government health centres and that patients were forced to buy them elsewhere, he said.

N. Yogish Bhat, MLA, suggested that medical colleges in the district be involved in the running of the PHCs.

However, Mamata Gatti, zilla panchayat president, said the issue should be thoroughly debated in the general meeting of the panchayat.

“We are looking at private participation from the colleges to ensure greater efficiency in their daily functioning,” Mr. Shetty said.
